6 Extreme Saving Tips You Can Use Now

When I started interviewing people for my book Generation Earn, I was shocked by some of the creative techniques people came up with to save money. The unifying theme was that people cut costs in ways that made their lives better, not worse. Instead of denying themselves splurges like new jeans or a new car, they learned how to cook their own food that tasted much better than anything served at a restaurant, or perfected their at-home tea and coffee brewing techniques.

Here are six ways you can start saving hundreds of dollars a month, while also improving your quality of life.

Don’t spend more than $30 on any item of clothing. Stores such as H&M, Forever 21, and Old Navy make it easy to buy cheap, stylish clothing. While you’ll probably need to make some exceptions, such as for a winter jacket, the vast majority of your wardrobe can be purchased on the cheap. Yoga studio owner Kimberly Wilson, who dresses in a way that would impress even Rachel Zoe, applies this technique so she can focus her money on growing her business instead. Wilson, who’s in her mid-30s and lives in Washington, DC, says she’d rather indulge in simple, daily pleasures than expensive shoes or jewelry. Estimated savings: $200 a month or more.

Party at home. Game nights and girls’ nights in have soared in popularity recently, which is no surprise given that a night out on the town means paying $8 or more for drinks and $50 or more when you include cab rides, cover charges, and meals. Gregory Go, 33, co-founder of Wisebread.com, invites people over for potlucks and game nights, which means he gets to spend time with friends for a fraction of the cost of a night out. As an added bonus, he tends to clean out his friends’ wallets in poker games. Estimated savings: $100 a month and up.

Give love coupons instead of gifts. As you plan your holiday shopping, consider this: Giving the gift of your time in the form of a coupon to take your mom to a museum, or out for tea, can be far more meaningful than buying her a cashmere sweater. Tim Kasser, professor of psychology at Knox College in western Illinois and father of two young children, encourages his family to give each other coupons for experiences, such as favorite meals or back rubs, rather than purchased gifts. For his sons’ birthdays, Tim typically gives them a special day with him, such as a trip to the local water park. Estimated savings: $25 a month or more.

Substitute fancy dinners with cheap date nights. Dining by candlelight at the most exclusive restaurant in town might seem romantic, but the bill can put a damper on those loving feelings. Instead, try these ideas, suggested by Alpha Consumer readers: Browse a bookstore. Sketch portraits of each other. Take dance lessons. Have a picnic. Go to a lecture or performance at your local college. Watch a model rocket launch. Estimated savings: $200 a month and up.

Turn your freezer into your very own “fast-food restaurant.” Kate Deriso, 39, a holistic health counselor in Sterling, Virginia, spends no more than $150 a week on her entire food budget for her husband and herself. They make their own breakfasts, lunches, and dinners and rarely eat out, because they’ve discovered they can make better meals themselves. She grows her own alfalfa sprouts to spruce up sandwiches and cooks one-pot dishes such as her favorite chicken and olive dish. She calls her freezer, which is stacked full of ready-to-eat leftovers, her “fast-food restaurant.” Estimated savings: $400 a month and up.

Eat before you go to restaurants. Ben, a thirty-something lawyer in Washington, DC, who works for a nonprofit and earns around $52,000 a year, buys a six-pack of bagels and a box of tea each week and skips the coffee shop. He also snacks on peanut butter and banana sandwiches before meeting up with friends at night so he can bypass the pricey entrees at restaurants, opting for cheaper appetizers instead. Estimated savings: $100 a month or more.

With these techniques, you’ll have fun hosting parties, holding cheap date nights, and inventing new meals and gift coupons, while putting a lot more money in the bank. Total Savings: At least $1,000 a month.

Money Saving Tips: Get Raise for Next Year

The mark down on Halloween decorations is amazing in many stores because each year companies that manufacture Halloween items change them up. So stores don't want to be caught with last year's ghouls and spooks, so to speak. Although, you have to time it right and not care-so-much about what you'll be picking up. In other words, if there is a decoration that you can't live without, buy it right away - don't wait. But if you just want to inexpensively add to your stash, the last few days, including October 30th, 31st and November 1st, are the days to shop.

Happiness for All

Happiness: Happiness is a wonderful emotion. Happiness is a soul, dancing with joy. When you feel happy, you achieve more. Here are some wise words about happiness.

There are people who sometimes experience a "low" for no reason whatsoever. I can buy that, provided we promise ourselves to get happy for no reason too. Here are some quotations that I would describe as "happy quotes."
Maya Angelou
A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.

William Arthur Ward
A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition.

Charlie Chaplin
A day without laughter is a day wasted.

Hugh Downs
A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.

Mother Teresa
A joyful heart is the inevitable result of a heart burning with love.

Washington Irving
A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles.

Victor Borge
A laugh is the shortest distance between two people.

William Shakespeare
A light heart lives long.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn
A man is happy so long as he chooses to be happy.

Unknown Author
A smile is a curved line that sets things straight.

Teen Sexting: What Should the Laws Be?

Read what 29 other parents have said and add your opinion!

With many communities talking about teen sexting and discussing the changes in the sex offender laws to reflect the true intent of sexting by teens and differentiate it from the intent of a child molester, I feel parents need to have their voices heard. Here is where we can do that. So I am asking, if your teenager sent a nude or semi-nude picture to a boyfriend/girlfriend and it was distributed throughout their school, what do you feel the appropriate punishment should be from the school officials and law enforcement?

Counter-Productive to Sex Offender Laws
I do feel that kids need to be held accountable for their actions, especially malicious actions involving exchange of explicit material. However, accusing them of being sexual predators and having a legacy of being a registered sex offender seems a punishment that is at least a little off-target. In the long run, it may even be counter-productive concerning the real sex offenders, causing people to discount the "registered sex offender" tag.

laws too strict..
I am dealing with a situation where our step daughter was "in love" so she was naive and sent nude pics to her boyfriend. They broke up now he says she will go to jail for this and is harassing her. I don`t think the rest of her life should be ruined for one mistake! We all made mistakes and she is no different then any other teen!
—Guest ava
The effects are serious
I currently am going through this with my almost 16yr old. After realizing what has happened by her, she has tried to commit suicide due to the nature of the charges that could be hanging over her head. She is an honor student in school, actually high honors. Yes I do pay attention to what she does, all it takes it a digital camera whether on a phone or even web cam or separate and only a few seconds will do the damage. It is worse when then they are loaded out on the porno sites by them because they have been dared by peers. Jail time for this age is not what is needed. Nor ruining their lives because they gave into peer pressure. I have taken away the cell phone, and monitor the sites even closer. But they can still do it at a friends house where there may not be monitoring. It has become a living hell since this has happened. Education at home, school and even law enforcement to teens today could help, but in the end the individual makes their own choice.

Consent Laws must be reviewed revised
These consent laws were to protect our communities not make our teenagers register as sex offenders for the rest of their lives. What will their communities that don't know them think of them when they are older? That they raped a under aged child. Come on! These laws are unjust and Must be changed.
—Guest Steph
There must be accountability
I think home is the first place to start. Parent must be more aware of what their children are doing on their cell phones. I have removed picture messing from my sons cell phone in an effort to avoid this problem. No one can send him a picture and he cannot send anyone else a picture so he will not get caught up in that because kids will be kids. However, parents have to think outside of the box and be smarter. I don't see picture messaging as a necessity. He needs a phone at 14 for only one reason in my eye and that's to contact me or other family in the event of an emergency. If you have a more responsible child and OK this service to their phone I think as a parent you should be held accountable for any misuse by your child because at that point you should monitor his or her activity more closely.

Need Counseling
If a minor(under the age of 18) is sending such disrespectful material either about themselves or of others, there's a problem and immediate counseling should be the norm along with revoking of cell phone and internet privileges. I have a problem with the "kids will be kids" mentality. If people are to be respectful of others when they are adults, then why aren't we teaching children the same. Where's the sense of decency most Americans have when I grew up with? Believe me, being ashamed of something for which you'd done as a child will always be with you for your lifetime. As a parent, one should always be vigilant on keeping their child safe from all dangers. Especially with cell phones and laptops connected to the internet.

Against Loopholes for Pedophiles
If your 14 yr old daughter had been raped by another teen you would be quite surprised to learn how difficult it is to get justice. These criminals will say ANYTHING to get away with their crimes. Creating laws to give them yet another easy way out will not only put more people at risk, but it will make the healing process for your daughter nearly impossible as she continues to face him daily at school and other places. PLEASE, PLEASE think of your child's safety and the importance of having as much power as possible to stop these criminals from continuing to do what they love so much. You cannot imagine how many children loose their innocence this way and how many lives it destroys. You cannot protect your children from everything, so don't think this cannot occur if you are a good parent. We need STRONGER LAWS for sexual predators, NOT LIGHTER!! Teens can refrain from this behavior and they should. QUIT HELPING CRIMINALS!!!

School Reaction to the Times
I think the schools should make a point to separating the boys and the girls to discuss the implications of sexting in a small group format. Just like we did back in 5th grade when we separated to discuss the changes of puberty when we change from boys to young men and girls to young women. Also discuss the outcomes of what can happen when they do this, both legally, academically and from their parents.
—Guest Travis
The laws are not justly.
I think that children should not be getting misdemeanors and felonies for this. No way, no how. That is just unbelievable! This is not a good enough of a reason to mess up a child's entire future because of a stupid little picture that they wanted to send. Of course, if there is the chance they didn't want it sent and someone else did it then yeah maybe give them like a hundred dollar fine or community service. Not prison time and a record so that student cant get a good job or something in the future.
—Guest T
Gravity of a teens decision
Fifteen year old's don't understand the gravity of their actions and won't for another three years because they are still under the security of their homes and their parents. There are better punishments for such an offense.
—Guest mb
Mature enough...
Some teens know exactly what they are doing and both parties should be held 100% accountable.
—Guest ginn
Kids will be kids...
In the 50s, it was going to 'make out lane' and holding hands. Nowadays, teens will expose their bodies and send pictures to their lover. Now, I do think this is inappropriate but that should be left up to the parent to decide. Now, if pictures are obtained through a cell phone and sent around schools a school administrator should talk to the parents of the one who took the picture and who received and forwarded the picture. They should contact parents and thats as far as this should get. Teaching abstinence will just make kids touch each other more, and outlawing sexting will make kids take more inappropriate pictures and perhaps prostitute themselves by selling these forbidden images. Now, sending pictures to people over the Internet that the teen has no relation to is another story. This should be handled less gently and the one receiving the photos should be punished severely as well.
—Guest Ella parent
No punishment.
First of all, a chip would be near impossible or extremely expensive to make that would detect nude photos on a phone. Televisions with chips only work because the shows are tagged by the producers as indecent for children. Also, those with the photos shouldn't be punished just because someone else decided they were going to get naked and take some pictures. Nobody forced your kids to do that.
—Guest Nick
The Person Sending Pictures
I think the person sending the text picture should be the one who should be punished.

Share Why You Believe in Drug and Alcohol Prevention

“Drug and alcohol prevention is important to me because I, my family, and many friends have been deeply affected by the use of drugs and alcohol. It has ruined people’s lives and many people I know have lost their lives to the battle of addiction. This world would be a much safer and happier place if people could somehow find what they needed in something else (other than drugs and alcohol).” – Facebook Fan of The Partnership at Drugfree.org

We talk to so many committed parents and caregivers who care about this issue and want to get involved. So, we’re diving into the world of social media to help raise awareness in new ways and highlighting campaigns we’ve launched for web-savvy parents and teens.

Our Facebook Photo Campaign:

Help us share reasons why Prevention of Drug & Alcohol Abuse Is Important to You! Take a photo with your answer on this PDF and post it to our Facebook page. Don’t forget to tag yourself and spread the word!

Money Saving Tips: Buy Halloween Candy in Bulk and Share

You can save a ton by buying Halloween candy in bulk, but it usually means you have to give out the same type of candy and get stuck with the same type that sits around the house until you throw it away. One way around this is to partner up with a friend or neighbor and split the leftover candy, so you will have a variety that your family can enjoy.

Sexting:Teens Putting Sex and Texting Together

Sexting is:
Sexting is creating pictures or videos of sexual acts or nudity and texting it over cell phones. One resource I read called it 'the intersection of promiscuity and technology.' This is happening with and without a teen’s permission. A survey released in December by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy said about a third of teenage boys and a quarter of teen girls say they've seen nude or semi-nude images that were meant originally to be private.

Sexting is a crime, but:
At this point, authorities are trying to figure out what crime to charge teens with when caught up in a sexting situation. The crime itself, if committed by an adult, would be child pornography. That is a federal offense that doesn’t really cover the issue here.

Famous American Quotes About Teens

United States of America, a country comprising of thirteen former colonies of Great Britain, is founded on the principles of liberty. Hence freedom is a value nurtured by every American soul. Today's jokes

A jealous husband hires a private detective to check up on his wife. The husband tells the detective, he wants both a written account and as many videos of her in any kind of compromising situations as the man can get.Two weeks later the detective calls the man and tells him he has all the evidence he needs. They make an appointment for a meeting. The two of them are sitting there watching the videos. The man sees his wife meeting another man, then the two of them are walking in the park laughing. Another series shows her with a different man laughing and dancing. All together, hewatches a dozen or so different activities, each with a different man, each time both she and the man are sharing obvious utter glee."Amazing," said the shocked husband, "simply amazing ! I just can't believe it.""What can't you believe ?" asked the detective, "It's all right there for you to see, plus I have all the times and dates in my log.""I know, I know!" said the man, still in shock, "I just can't believe my wife could be that much fun."

5 Beauty Weapons For Your Purse

The change from hot humid weather to fall's cooler temperatures can dry out your skin. Keep a small tube of moisturizer on hand to make dry, cracked hands supple again, of course. But did you know moisturizer can help tame those flyaways, too?
#2 Eyelash Curler
An eyelash curler is one of those steps lots of women skip but makeup artists swear is the key to a wide, bright-eyed look. Don't be scared of this medieval-looking device––once you see how great your peepers look, you won't stay away.
#3 Blotting Papers
There's a fine line between a gorgeous glow and just plain greasy. To stay on the right side, blot these paper squares over your face to soak up shine without messing up your makeup. (Bathroom paper towels or tissue toilet covers can also work wonders in a pinch!)
#4 Eye Drops
If you're staring at a computer screen all day, chances are you get dry, tired eyes. Keep eye drops in your purse to moisturize and brighten eyes. Stealth beauty use for eye drops? Use them to tone down redness in your blemishes when you don't have concealer.
#5 Petroleum Jelly
It's back to basics with this beauty bargain. Use petroleum jelly to moisturize skin, nourish cuticles, and as a lip and lash gloss. Comb your brows into a place and run a thin layer of your eyebrows for a polished look that costs pennies.

It also helps that the world has a collective shoe fetish, causing men and women to view the high heel as sexy and alluring. Wearing high heels is one thing women definitely do for the benefit of men, since they are usually not the most comfortable choice in footwear. A woman’s feet and wallet both suffer for the cause of great shoes.
Unlike men who can get away with rolling out of bed, throwing on some semi-clean clothes and doing a bit of minor grooming, women spend a ton of time and money on their appearance. Sure, they dress and groom in order to feel good about themselves, but the idea of being attractive to men is never far from their minds either. Unfortunately, a lady's efforts are too often overlooked by male admirers who may appreciate the look as a whole, but don't notice the little things that go into it.
A study released in the fall of 2010 by Northumbria University in Britain reinforces the idea that men are inattentive to these details by showing that men couldn’t see a difference in the way a woman walks when wearing heels or flats. Esquire seems to think North American men are more observant, retweeting The Huffington Post’s link to the article Men Don’t Notice When Women Wear High Heels, Study Says, adding, “Yes we do.”
If you want to really impress her, check out AskMen’s list of the Top 10: Things She Wants You To Notice, including things you should pay attention to about her appearance, behavior and efforts. Not all of them require a direct comment, but some kind of reaction is warranted to let her know you appreciate all the elements that make her a fabulous girlfriend.

Keeping the Kids Safe This Halloween

Halloween, while the absolutely favorite holiday for many fathers and children, is fraught with risk for kids. Dark streets, costumes with limited visibility, and children who have fun terrorizing smaller ones, are all part of the Halloween experience. How to Become a Millionaire?

Step One to Becoming a Millionaire - Learn What You Don't Know?

My book find of the week is courtesy of Kristi Hughes who emailed to tell me about Robert Lawson's new book, "Dare to Be a Millionaire." Step No. 1 in his 20-year plan is to "learn what you don't know."
"One of the most powerful and significant investments you can make in your life lies in the development of your own abilities and potential," says Dr. Lawson. "The more skilled and adept you become at helping yourself, the more you will be able to empower and help others."
Good advice, especially this week, when we're spotlighting eight considerations when thinking about going back to school. Perhaps our list needs another item: How will school help you develop your natural abilities?
I like it.

You Might As Well Do What You Love

When Wall Street crashed and jobs once considered most secure were lost, many gave up on business and law and decided to do what they love. It's the age-old choice between humanities and the sciences. Patricia Cohen wrote about the choice for The New York Times:
"Terry Shtob, the director of liberal arts at N.Y.U.'s continuing education school, said enrollment in arts and humanities programs for this fall grew 5 percent from last fall.
Many of those enrolled turned out to be laid-off Wall Street workers who were eligible for emergency retraining grants from the government. Ms. Shtob said her impression, after speaking to a few students, was that they had originally chosen careers in fields like business and law primarily because they felt those were financially secure. When that turned out not to be case, she said, they decided, 'I might as well do what I love.'"
It reminds me of Marsha Sinetar's book, "Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow."
Which did you choose? Sciences or arts? Which would you choose today?

Help Your Children In Reading Books

Helping your child become and remain a capable, life-long reader is one of the best things you can do as a dad long-term. Find out ways that dads help their children learn to read and to keep reading.
Lately, our local school district has been working hard to get fathers involved in their children's education. As I try to stay on top of fathers' issues in the media, my sense is that this is a growing trend. The epidemic of fatherlessness in the world has left children without one of their most important role models. And father's involvement is an important predictor of the success of his child's education. So what can a dad do who wants to help his kids learn to read and to keep reading all their lives? What I have discovered through my own experience and in researching this issue is that there are as many creative ideas as there are fathers.
Here are some ideas for helping your child come to love reading--ideas that any father can implement.

10 Tips for Date Night

You know what you’re going to wear; you’ve been thinking about it during the day. You’re proud of yourself and think: “Wow, I’m on top of this, and I’ll be looking sharp in my white shirt.” Unfortunately, it was all talk (well, thought) and no action. Just 10 minutes before leaving you reach for that white shirt only to realize that it’s wrinkled and a tad stained. Now what? You’re not excited about the other options. Suddenly nothing else will cut it, oh, and watch as your stress level rises and self-image plummets.

This could have been avoided had you prepped your clothes the day before. Is that white shirt wrinkled? Iron it. Is it hopeless? Find an alternative. Do your shoes need a shining? You get the idea
